Moscow, November 21 (Sputnik) — This morning at about 5:45 a.m. Moscow time, a dozen luxury cars worth nearly $3.3 million from brands including Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Mercedes and Porsche were destroyed in a fire near the center of Moscow, local media reported.

The fire took only 30 minutes to engulf the private car park belonging to the ‘Sinoos’ construction firm, LifeNews explained. No injuries or damage to the surrounding buildings was reported.

According to the parking lot’s guard, the fire may have started as a result of faulty wiring in a Mercedes G-Class SUV parked on the lot. The guard told LifeNews that “at 5:45 a.m. I saw a flash in the salon of the Mercedes. When I went up to get a closer look, smoke started coming out of the hood. I think something [may have] happened with the car’s wiring.”

The guard went on to note that within seconds, the fire under the hood of the Mercedes intensified, spreading to the gas tank and causing an explosion, which spread burning gasoline all over the lot, including under the other vehicles, which quickly caught fire. The fire is estimated to have covered roughly 50 meters at its peak intensity, and the temporary wooden canopy covering the vehicles also caught fire, falling on top of them.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, putting out the fire by about 6:30 a.m. and finishing their work completely by about 8:30 a.m., RBK noted. Several of the vehicles were burned beyond recognition by the intense heat of the fire, only their metal carcasses remaining. Police investigators have cordoned off the scene and begun their investigation. They have not ruled out the possibility of arson. LifeNews outlined two additional possible causes, apart from faulty wiring. One is that the fire may have been started by a competitor of Sinoos as revenge for losing a contract bid to the firm; another is that local residents, unhappy about the construction firm parking their vehicles near their homes, may have set fire to the vehicles.

In a second, apparently unrelated incident in the south of Moscow this morning, three vehicles, including a Volkswagen Passat, a VAZ and a Lada were also destroyed in a fire.
