Riot police round up protesters and bundle them into vans minutes after they unfurl anti-Kremlin banners

Police detained a dozen opposition activists as they tried to hold a sit-in in central Moscow on Wednesday.

Riot police rounded up the protesters and bundled them into vans minutes after they unfurled anti-Kremlin banners and sat on the pavement.

The protesters chanted demands for the prime minister, Vladimir Putin, to step down and called for "free elections" at the parliamentary vote in December. The protests are the latest in a series of actions on the last day of every month with 31 days. The date is a nod to the 31st article of the Russian constitution, which guarantees the right of assembly.

Since coming to power 11 years ago, Putin has rolled back many of the democratic achievements of the 1990s.
