Putin calls for setting up consolidated antiterrorist front under UN aegis

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls for setting up a consolidated antiterrorist front under the UN aegis.

"We are facing a destructive barbaric ideology again today, and we have no right to allow the newly-minted obscurants to attain their ends," Putin said in his annual address to the Federal Assembly on Dec. 3.

"It's necessary to abandon all differences and set up one powerful and consolidated antiterrorist front acting on the basis of international law under the UN aegis," he said.

"Each civilized country should make a contribution to the destruction of terrorism and confirm its solidarity. And do so not by mere declarations but by concrete action. And this means no refuge to the gunmen," he said.

"There should be no double standards, no contacts" and "no criminal and bloody business with the terrorists," he said.

"We know, for example, that Turkey is stuffing its pockets and letting terrorists make money on selling oil plundered in Syria. It's with this money that the thugs recruit mercenaries, buy weapons, and mastermind inhuman terrorist attacks targeting our citizens and citizens of France, Lebanon, Mali, and other countries," Putin said.

Putin has said that militants currently active on Syrian territory are posing a serious threat to Russia.

"A serious threat to us is coming from militants concentrating in Syria. There are many natives of Russia and CIS countries among them," Putin said.

"They [militants] are receiving money, weapons and are accumulating strength, and if they become strong enough and win there, they will also inevitably come to us in order to sow fear and hatred, blow up, kill and torture people," Putin said.

"We must meet and eliminate them at distant approaches. It is for this reason that the decision was made [to launch] a military operation on the basis of an official request from the legal and legitimate Syrian authorities. And in Syria our armed forces are fighting primarily for Russia and are defending the security of our citizens," the Russian president said.

"Russia's army and fleet have convincingly shown their combat potential and their increased capabilities," he added.
